Port of Call: Weymouth (cont.)

Weymouth boasts of a place I've never seen before: a swannery, located in the very lovely little village of Abbotsbury.  This was a natural nesting area for swans to begin with, and the park was lightly and sensitively developed so as not to disturb the birds.  Park employees regularly feed the feathery lovelies to further assure their contentment.  As a result, the birds are quite used to human visitors, even when they're nesting.  From personal experience, it appears thy have a security zone around their nests of about a foot in diameter; you can get quite close, but at 1 foot distance you'll get nipped. The swans are massive, and with their wings fully extended, they're actually a bit scary.  But the are rapturously beautiful and David and I were quite entranced by them.  Enjoy!
not a swan
still not a swan

(For some odd reason I had a devil of a time getting the brightness and detail right on these,
still I think you get the general feel of the swannery.)

The good burghers of Weymouth were so delighted with our visit, they sent
an artillery detachment down to the dock to make sure we left.

Port of Call: Weymouth

After Bermuda our next port of call was Weymouth on the southern coast of England. There is a ravine there which, due to peculiarities of climate and geography, has a semi-tropical micro climate. There is a lovely botanical garden there; unfortunately no one mentioned the path wound its way continuously up and down the slopes of the ravine. Beautiful, but also exhausting...
