Part of the attraction to this particular cruise was a port of call at the Azores. The Azores are part of Portugal and are about as far from mainland Portugal as Bermuda is from the Carolinas. On the map, it looks very much like it's just stuck out there in the middle of the ocean with nothing else around it, minding it's own business. OK, I gotta see what's goin' on there. It's quite charming: narrow windy streets, ornate old churches, and it adds a new country to our roster.
I wonder how they got all of the building materials and equipment out there with the manpower to build all of those large buildings. It seems as if they have packed a lot of large buildings onto what looks like small islands.
ReplyDeleteThis is Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island, the capital and largest city. It sits on a narrow peninsula jutting out from the island mainland and so looks like it's taking u the whole place.
