The Mean Streets of Alexandria

Yesterday it finally cooled down to 80º (26ºC) with acceptable humidity and bright sunshine, so I seized the opportunity to take a hour's stroll through Old Town.  I took perhaps too many street views, but here are some of the best--with occasional captions.

This is very typical Washington DC architecture, quite uncommon in Old Town.

Reputedly the narrowest house in Alexandria (in blue) said to have been built by a local merchant for his mistress--cheapskate!

However, in Old Town it's best not to judge the size of a house by its frontage...

A Favorite Trip

One of my all-time favorite, unforgettable trips was in 2008, taking the White Pass Railway (https://wpyr.com/) up from Skagway, Alaska up to the British Columbia boarder and back again.  Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush,the trip encompasses mountains, glaciers and gorges, waterfalls, tunnels, and trestles climbing 3,000 feet in elevation over 20 miles.  Here are some of the best shots...

Disappointment

Well, the hurricane came through hours earlier than expected, and I slept through it.  Dang!  I like a good storm, and this one apparently packed quite a wallop.  The view from the terrace, glassed in, 3 storeys up, on the top of a hill, can be quite spectacular (better if they'd just cut some of the dang trees down that block the view to Old Town Alexandria).  Happily, as near as I can tell, the damage amounted to some fallen trees and a bit of flooding, but nothing terrible that I have read.  ⚡️😴⚡️😴⚡️😴

Passing Hurricane

As Isaias moves up the coast, a band of storms sweeping ahead of it will mercifully bring our temps down into the 80's (c. 28ºC) and dump a whole lot of rain.  The humidity will remain high, but the cool-down will be most welcome.  Other than that, a day shockingly like every other here.  I'm going to fold laundry... woohoo!
